IITM BS Electronics Laboratory (EE1105): Syllabus and Tips

Electronics Laboratory (EE1105) is the largest foundation lab in the IITM BS in Electronic Systems, at 3 credits. Over 8 weeks you test analog circuits first and digital circuits after that. You need the ESTC Lab done, and you take Electrical and Electronic Circuits (EEC) and Digital Systems before it or in the same term.

The Sep 2025 syllabus calls it EE1105. The handbook tables call the same lab EE1902, with the same name and 3 credits. The instructors listed are Prof. Sankaran Aniruddhan, Prof. Boby George and Prof. Janakiraman Viraraghavan, all from Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras.

What you need before the Electronics Lab

Here the handbook tables and the May 2026 lab policy agree:

• The ESTC Lab (EE1104) must be passed first.
• EEC (EE1103) and Digital Systems (EE1102) are corequisites. Take them earlier or in the same term.

What you learn in the Electronics Lab

The official aim is to understand basic analog and digital circuits and use them in real applications. The 8 weeks split into three parts:

• Weeks 1 to 3: circuit behaviour. Two-port networks, resonant circuits and how they respond at different frequencies, and how first order circuits react over time.
• Week 4: nonlinear devices. You measure and describe how nonlinear parts behave. In EEC, the nonlinear elements covered are diodes and transistors.
• Weeks 5 to 8: digital circuits. Logic gates, functional circuits, datapath and control circuits, and sequential circuits.

The first half follows EEC closely, and the second half follows Digital Systems. That is why both are corequisites.

Campus visit, kit and lab rules

• In both approved tracks, this lab is in your second foundation visit with the Embedded C Programming Lab. Option B also puts the Linux Systems Lab in that visit.
• You cannot register for only one lab in a term. Read the ES lab registration rules before you plan.
• The handbook names Digital Systems and EEC as courses where the lab kit is used most. This lab is built on both, so expect to use the kit a lot at home.

The syllabus does not describe how the lab is graded.

Who finds it hard and how to prepare

This lab asks you to hold two subjects in your head: analog circuits and digital logic. The medium pace study plan puts EEC, Digital Systems and this lab in the same term, which is heavy.

• If you can, finish EEC and Digital Systems before this lab term.
• If you take them together, keep the theory videos at least a week ahead of the lab weeks.
• Practise reading frequency response plots on a log scale before weeks 1 and 2.
• Write the truth table before you wire any gate circuit. Check each output against it.
• Use the kit's oscilloscope early. Learn to set the time and voltage scale so the signal fits the screen.

What to take before and after

Before: ESTC, the ESTC Lab, EEC and Digital Systems. After: the handbook says courses up to the Electronics Laboratory must be done before you register for diploma courses. Common questions

Why is this lab worth 3 credits when most foundation labs are 1?

The syllabus shows 3 practical credits (0-0-3-3) but gives no reason. It covers both analog and digital circuits, so expect more lab work than in the 1 credit labs.

Can I take the Electronics Lab in the same term as EEC and Digital Systems?

Yes. Both are corequisites in the handbook tables and in the lab policy, so the same term is allowed. It is a heavy term, so plan your weekly hours carefully.

Which lab should I pair it with?

The approved tracks pair it with the Embedded C Programming Lab. That lab needs the C Programming Lab first, so clear your first visit labs before this term.
