The IITM BS Electronic Systems Lab Kit: What It Is and Cost

Every IITM BS Electronic Systems student needs a lab kit to do the lab experiments at home. It is a USB powered instrument that works as a function generator and an oscilloscope. You buy it separately, and its cost is not part of the course fees. The handbook does not give a price. It says the cost will be fixed and announced to students, and kit details come after you register.

What the lab kit is

The handbook calls it an electronic kit and a learning tool. It runs on USB power and is meant to be used with a computer. It can:

• Source currents and voltages, so you can feed power and signals into a circuit.
• Measure currents and voltages, so you can check what the circuit is doing.
• Work as a function generator, which produces test signals such as waves at a set frequency.
• Work as an oscilloscope, which shows how a voltage changes over time.

You use it to check that the circuits you build in lab courses actually work.

Which courses use it

The kit is not a one-term purchase. The handbook says you will use it over several terms, mainly in hardware courses that have a lab part. How much the lab kit costs

The handbook does not state a price. What it does say:

• The kit must be bought separately. It is the kit that IIT Madras recommends.
• The cost will be finalised and announced to students.
• The cost is not included in the course fees.
• Details of the kit, with its cost, are shared with students who register.

The kit does not replace campus visits

Home experiments with the kit are only one part of a lab. You still have to visit IIT Madras in person to show your work and complete the lab. The handbook treats these visits as mandatory. See ES campus visits for how many trips you need.

Your computer and the kit

The handbook says the kit is expected to support Windows and Linux. It does not mention macOS for the kit. The general system requirements allow Windows 10, Ubuntu 20.04 or macOS Mojave, and say dual boot is desirable. If you use a Mac, ask support whether the kit will work on it before you rely on it. Common questions

Can I use my own oscilloscope or college lab instead of the kit?

The handbook says a lab kit is required for the lab experiments and that students should get the kit IIT Madras recommends. It does not offer a substitute. Ask support if you already own similar equipment.

Do I need the kit before my first term?

The lab policy says there is no lab in Term 1, and kit details are shared with students who register. So the kit matters from your first lab term. Follow the programme's instructions on when to buy it.

Do I need a new kit every term?

No. The handbook says the kit is used over several terms, so you keep using the same one. It does not say anything about refunds or resale.
