Is the IITM BS Degree UGC Approved? Why IITs Do Not Need It

UGC approval does not apply to the IITM BS. IITs do not come under the University Grants Commission (UGC). IIT Madras gets its power to award degrees from an Act of Parliament, the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. So the BS needs no UGC approval, and calling it "UGC approved" is not correct. The right description is a degree awarded by IIT Madras under the IIT Act.

What IIT Madras says about UGC

The Director's message on the IIT Madras website also calls it an institute of national importance.

The ES FAQ answer applies to any IIT degree, so it covers Data Science too. The Dean's letter is on the ES important documents page and names only the ES diploma and BS.

Why "UGC approved" is the wrong label

"UGC approved" is a phrase for institutions that come under UGC. IIT Madras says it does not. So:

• Do not write "UGC approved" or "UGC-DEB approved" for this degree on forms, CVs or social media. We found no IIT Madras page that uses these labels for the BS.
• If a website, agent or coaching centre tells you the IITM BS is "UGC approved", they are not quoting IIT Madras. Check what IITM itself says.

What about NBA or AICTE?

The support desk question also asks about NBA. Its answer is that IIT Madras degrees do not need accreditation. We found no IIT Madras statement about AICTE for the BS. If a form asks about AICTE, write to the support team before you fill it.

Why the handbook mentions UGC

Both handbooks say the programme counts credits using the UGC system, where 14 hours of learner engagement make 1 credit. They add that 1 BS credit equals 3 credits in the IIT Madras campus system. This is only about how credits are counted. It is not an approval. See how IITM BS credits work.

If a form or employer asks for UGC recognition

1. Show IIT Madras's own answer. The ES FAQ question "Is this degree UGC recognized?" and the support desk article on UGC and NBA are both public pages.
2. Explain it in one line: "IIT Madras awards this degree under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IITs do not come under UGC."
3. ES students can attach the Dean's letter of 1 September 2025. DS students can share the support desk answer.
4. For government exams, the ES FAQ says IIT Madras is happy to write to the exam body. Raise a support ticket and ask.
5. Remember that the final call is theirs. A legal degree still has to match each organisation's own rules. Read UPSC, SSC and bank exams after IITM BS and is it a real IIT Madras degree.

Common questions

Does "not under UGC" mean the degree is not recognised?

No. It means UGC is not the body that gives IITs their degree powers. The IIT Act does. The ES FAQ says any degree granted by an IIT is a legal degree.

What do I tick if a form asks "UGC recognised: Yes or No"?

Do not tick Yes, because that is not accurate. If there is a remarks box, write that the degree is awarded by IIT Madras under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. If there is no such box, ask the organisation how to fill it and keep their reply.

Is the DS BSc exit covered by the same point?

The BSc in Programming and Data Science is a degree granted by IIT Madras. The sample certificate on the DS website shows IIT Madras conferring it. So the IIT Act point applies to it too. Foundation certificates and diplomas are not degrees, so degree rules do not apply to them.
