IIT Madras Letter on BS Degree Validity: What It Says

IIT Madras has an official letter that confirms its Electronic Systems diploma and degree are valid. It is dated 1 September 2025 and signed by Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean, Academic Courses. It says the Diploma in Electronic Systems and the BS in Electronic Systems are official and recognised programmes of the institute. It bases this on powers given to IIT Madras by the Government of India through an Act of Parliament. It does not decide whether any particular employer, exam or university must accept the degree.

What the letter says

The letter is headed "To whom it may concern" and is printed on IIT Madras letterhead. In plain words, it says four things:

The part of the law it quotes

The letter quotes the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, Chapter II, section 6. This section lists the powers of each institute. Clause (1)(b) gives every institute the power to hold exams and to grant degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions or titles.

In simple terms, the IITs are set up under this Act, and the same Act lets each IIT award its own degrees and diplomas. So when IIT Madras grants the BS in Electronic Systems, it does so under its own legal power.

Which awards the letter names

What the letter does not say

• It does not rule for any employer, exam or university. Each organisation still sets its own eligibility. The letter confirms the programme is official. It does not say who must accept it.
• It does not compare the BS with a BTech or with any campus degree.

How students use this letter

Use it when someone doubts that the degree is real. It supports your own documents. It does not replace them.

• Job applications and background checks: if HR or a verification agency questions the degree, send this letter along with your degree certificate or credit completion letter.

Common questions

Does this letter make the IITM BS equal to a BTech?

No. It says the ES diploma and BS are official IIT Madras programmes. It does not compare them with a BTech or any other degree.

This letter names only the ES diploma and BS, not any DS award. Sending it for a DS degree may confuse the reader. Raise a support ticket and ask whether a similar letter exists for Data Science.

Is the ES Foundation certificate covered by this letter?
