MBA and CAT After IITM BS: Eligibility and Official Data

Yes, in general. The ES FAQ says any graduate can generally apply for an MBA, but you must check the eligibility rules of each institute or university. The IITM support desk says the same thing in a different way: the institute where you apply decides. So the real question is whether your degree, marks and timing fit that institute's rules.

What IITM's reports show

The DS batch reports list where graduates went for postgraduate study. A few went to business schools:

These are very small numbers. The reports name the institute, not the programme, and they do not say whether the student used the IITM degree or another degree to apply. In Batch 2025, 435 of the 545 were also doing another degree or were working.

Things to check before you apply

• Degree timing: an MBA programme may want your degree finished by a set date. In IITM BS you need at least 9 terms for a BSc certificate and 12 terms for a BS, counted from your first term. The original certificate comes only after the exit form and Senate approval. See the exit and certificate timeline.
• Proof while you wait: after you fill the exit form, you can ask for a provisional certificate. How it differs from the credit completion letter is explained in credit completion letters vs provisional certificates.
• Percentage: many forms ask for a percentage. A Dean (Academic Courses) letter of 14 June 2024 gives the Senate-approved rule: percentage = CGPA x 10. So a CGPA of 7.2 becomes 72%. Check whether the exam or institute asks you to use the university's own formula, and attach the letter if it does.
• Class or division: the same letter says no class, division or rank is awarded.
• "UGC recognised" boxes: IITs do not come under UGC. Read why IITs do not need UGC approval before you fill such a field.
• Dual degree students: you may be able to apply with your other degree, based on the institute's rules.

BSc or BS for an MBA?

In Data Science, the BSc in Programming and Data Science is a degree from IIT Madras after 114 credits. If your target institute accepts a 3-year degree, the BSc may be enough. Do not confuse this with IIT Madras's BS in Management and Data Science. That is a separate undergraduate programme, not an MBA.

Common questions

Can I write CAT while I am still in the BS?

Check whether the exam allows students who have not yet finished their degree. There is no fixed "final year" in this term-based programme, so ask the exam body what proof it wants from you.

Can I apply for an MBA with a Foundation certificate or a diploma?

The ES FAQ talks about graduates. The Foundation certificate and the diplomas are not degrees, so they are unlikely to meet a graduate-only rule. Check the institute's exact wording.

Does the Senate-approved formula mean every institute will use it?

No. The letter tells you how IIT Madras converts CGPA. An institute can still apply its own method, so read its instructions.
