Is IITM BS Accepted by Foreign Universities and Employers?

IIT Madras says the BS is an official degree that meets the requirement of any study or job that accepts a BS degree. It does not say every foreign university, employer or government will accept it. Each organisation decides for itself. Your job is to show clearly what the degree is, with the right documents.

Who decides in each case

We found no IIT Madras statement on visas or on how credential agencies rate the degree. Forum posts about these outcomes are not official, so treat them with care.

How to explain your degree

Most questions from abroad are about what the degree is. Answer with facts:

• Exact name: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Data Science and Applications, or Bachelor of Science in Electronic Systems, from Indian Institute of Technology Madras. The DS BSc is a Bachelor of Science in Programming and Data Science.
• Legal basis: awarded under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. IITs do not come under UGC. See why IITs do not need UGC approval.
• Mode: lessons are online. Quizzes and end term exams are in person and invigilated at exam centres. ES adds lab sessions on campus. Say this plainly if asked.
• Credits: the BS needs 142 credits and the DS BSc needs 114. The handbooks count 14 hours of learner engagement as 1 credit, and say 1 BS credit equals 3 IIT Madras campus credits. More in how IITM BS credits work.
• Grades: a 10-point scale with letter grades S (10), A (9), B (8), C (7), D (6) and E (4). The Senate-approved percentage conversion is CGPA x 10. No class, division or rank is awarded.
• Language: a Dean's letter of 14 June 2024 says English is the medium of instruction in all IIT Madras BS programmes.
• Course content: the DS handbook links a DS course booklet. The ES important documents page has the ES syllabus with week-wise topics.

Documents to collect

• Your original degree certificate, after Senate approval.
• A provisional certificate if you are still waiting for the original. You can request it after the exit form.
• Your grade card. The Dean's letter says only cumulative grade cards are issued, not term-wise ones. Share the letter if someone asks for semester marksheets.
• An official transcript. IIT Madras sends the physical copy to an India address only, so you forward it yourself.
• The Dean's letters above, which are addressed "to whom it may concern".

Your name on the degree follows your Class 10 certificate or a Gazette name change, not your passport. This comes from a letter of 12 August 2025. If your passport name is different, keep proof that both names are yours.

Common questions

Does online learning hurt acceptance abroad?

There is no official data on this. Some universities may ask about the mode of study. Answer honestly: online lessons with in-person, invigilated exams. The ES FAQ says the marksheet does not mention a mode such as online or distance. See does the certificate say online.

Can I get a WES or similar evaluation?

We found no IITM guidance on credential agencies. Check the agency's document list first. Remember that IITM sends physical documents to India addresses only.

Is a Foundation certificate or diploma useful abroad?

They are official IIT Madras awards, but they are not degrees. Universities that ask for a bachelor's degree need the BSc (DS only) or the BS.

Can I study the BS while living outside India?
