IITM BS With a Full-Time Job: How Many Courses per Term?

For most people with a 9-to-6 job, 1 or 2 courses a term is realistic. IIT Madras expects about 10 hours of work per course each week, so 2 courses means about 20 hours a week. The Data Science (DS) FAQ expects a part-time learner to finish the degree in 4 to 5 years. The Electronic Systems (ES) FAQ says 4 to 8 years. Whatever pace you pick, the checkpoints set a minimum, so you cannot slow down to zero for long.

You will not be the only one working

The DS program report of September 2025 counted 1,301 working professionals at the foundation level, 2,097 at the diploma level and 487 at the degree level. At the degree level, working professionals were the largest group.

Hours per week for each load

The ES handbook's "comfortable" study plan is 2 courses a term at about 20 hours a week. It splits this as 2 hours on each weekday and 10 hours over the weekend. That split works well for a DS student too.

Graded assignments are due every week. Do not leave both courses' assignments for Sunday night.

The minimum pace the checkpoints allow

Pace is flexible, but not unlimited.

• DS foundation (joined from May 2024): at least 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6 terms, and all 8 in 9 terms. One course every term just meets this, with one spare term. A failed course uses up that spare.
• DS diploma (started from May 2024): at least 6 courses and 2 projects in the first 6 terms. That is 8 items in 6 terms, so 1 a term is not enough at this level.
• Joined from May 2026: you must finish the foundation and diploma levels within 15 terms (5 years) to move on to the degree level.
• ES foundation: 9 courses and 5 labs in 9 terms, with labs done on campus.
• Whole programme: up to 8 years.

Skipped terms count in these limits. Read foundation checkpoints and diploma checkpoints before you set your pace.

Exam days and leave from work

Most IITM BS exams are on Sundays. But the DS FAQ says IITM tries to keep exams on weekends and this may not be possible for every exam. The published calendar has some examples:

Programming quizzes apply only to courses that have them. Quizzes and end terms are in person at a centre in India, so add travel time. Our advice: when a term starts, put every exam date in your calendar and ask for leave early. All dates are in our exam dates list.

Apprenticeship at the BS level

At the BS level you can earn credits through an apprenticeship: up to 12 credits in DS and up to 8 in ES. The credited duration is 8 months, full time. The company must be pre-approved by IITM or approved by the apprenticeship committee. The credit transfer fee is Rs 5,000 per credit. During an apprenticeship, DS allows at most 2 courses a term, and ES recommends the same.

The handbooks do not say whether your current job can count as an apprenticeship. Ask the programme office before you plan around it. Details are in the apprenticeship guide.

Common questions

Can I take the exams online because I work full time?

No. The DS FAQ says quizzes and end term exams are in person at designated centres. Remote proctoring is only for students who live outside India.

What if a work trip clashes with a quiz?

A missed quiz scores 0 and there is no make-up quiz. You must attend at least one of the two quizzes to write the end term. You pick your exam cities at registration, so choose where you will actually be.

Can I skip a term during a busy season at work?

Yes. You can skip up to 2 terms in a row and pay a Rs 1,000 fee for each one. Those terms still count towards your checkpoints. See how to pause IITM BS.

Is Electronic Systems realistic with a job?

It is harder, because ES labs need campus visits of about 1 to 2 weeks. Read ES for working engineers first.
