IITM BS vs BCA, and Doing Both Together: What to Expect

A BCA is a college degree in computer applications, usually 3 years long and taught on campus. The IITM BS in Data Science (DS) is an online IIT Madras programme with a lot of maths and statistics, a programming track and a data science track. You can do both at the same time. It works if you keep your IITM course load small and check exam dates every term.

How the content differs

The IITM DS Foundation level has 8 courses: Maths 1 and 2, Statistics 1 and 2, Computational Thinking, Introduction to Python, and English 1 and 2. Half of the Foundation is maths and statistics, so expect a lot of both.

After that, the Diploma in Programming covers DBMS, PDSA, Java, System Commands and Application Development 1 and 2, with two projects. See the Diploma in Programming. The Diploma in Data Science covers machine learning, business data management and data tools.

Some topics, like programming and databases, may overlap with your BCA. That can make those IITM courses easier to study. It does not save you any credits. The handbook's credit transfer rules cover approved NPTEL courses and campus courses at listed institutes. They do not cover courses from your college degree.

The workload of doing both

The handbook counts 1 credit as about 14 hours of study work. So a 4-credit IITM course is about 56 hours over a 12-week term, or roughly 4 to 5 hours a week. Each course releases 2 to 4 hours of video a week, plus a graded assignment.

• You can take up to 4 courses a term. At the Foundation level, the course limit from your marks is only a suggestion.
• You cannot go too slowly either. Foundation students admitted from May 2024 must pass at least 4 courses in 4 terms, 6 in 6 terms and all 8 in 9 terms.
• The handbook's suggested Foundation plan takes three terms: 3 courses, then 2, then 3.

Exam clashes are your job

Every IITM course has two quizzes, at the end of weeks 4 and 8, and an end term exam. All are in person, at a centre in one of the cities you pick when you register. The handbook plans end terms for Sundays, but your college exams can still fall on the same day.

The handbook describes no special arrangement for clashes with college exams. The normal rules apply:

• A missed quiz scores 0. There is no make-up quiz.
• You must attend at least one quiz to be allowed into the end term.
• A missed end term gives an I grade. You can take a make-up exam once, in the next term, for Rs 1,000 per Foundation course or Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course.

If you plan an MCA later

MCA entrance tests and universities set their own eligibility rules. We have not checked whether an IITM BSc or BS is accepted in place of a BCA for every MCA entrance, including NIMCET. Read the official brochure of each exam or university before you rely on it. If you finish your BCA as well, your MCA eligibility will rest on that degree too.

Our view

A BCA with the IITM BS alongside is a reasonable pair. The BCA gives you a campus and classmates. The IITM BS adds maths, statistics and data science depth from IIT Madras. This pairing is still uncommon in the published data: 4 of the 545 students in the Batch 2025 summary held a BCA. If you must pick only one, the deciding question is whether you can study alone, online, with weekly deadlines.

Common questions

Can I start the IITM BS in my first year of BCA?

Yes. Anyone who has passed Class 12 can apply for the DS qualifier, and there is no rule against studying another degree at the same time. Plan for the qualifier's four weeks of assignments and the in-person exam.

I have finished two years of BCA. Can I skip the Foundation level?

The DS handbook allows direct entry to the diploma level for students who have completed 2 years of any undergraduate degree. You must pass a separate diploma qualifier exam. See direct diploma entry.

Will my college accept IITM BS courses for BCA credit?

That depends on your college. From the IITM side, the DS FAQ says the programme is standalone and its credits cannot be transferred to other colleges.

Which is harder, BCA or the IITM BS?

It depends on the college and on you. The IITM BS uses fixed pass marks, in-person exams and checkpoints that can remove students who fall behind.
