PhD and Research Fellowships for IITM BS Graduates

There is no single answer. IIT Madras says the BS is a valid degree, but each PhD programme and research fellowship sets its own eligibility. A call may name specific degrees, such as a Master's or an engineering degree. So you must read how each call words its rule. Inside IIT Madras, there are research routes for BS students, and some do not need GATE.

What the official sources say

• IITM support desk: eligibility for any programme is decided by the admitting institute. It is up to the organisation where you apply to accept the degree.
• IITM support desk (outside India): many BS students have secured Master's and PhD admits at universities outside India.
• DS handbook: with a GATE score you can apply for an MTech, MS or PhD. Which of these you can apply for depends on what other degree you hold besides the BS.

The Ministry of Education letter of September 2024

The ES important documents page carries a letter dated 20 September 2024 from the Secretary, Department of Higher Education. It went to the Directors of all centrally funded technical institutes.

• It notes that research programmes have usually admitted 4-year degree holders such as BE and BTech. 3-year BSc holders were expected to do a 2-year MSc first.
• It says 4-year BS degrees under NEP 2020 need 142 credits at many IITs, similar to their BTech programmes.
• It asks each institute to examine treating 4-year BS degrees as eligible for all programmes that earlier accepted a 3-year BSc plus a 2-year MSc.

This is a request, not a binding rule. It does not say which institutes changed their rules, and it does not cover the 3-year DS BSc exit. If a call is unclear, you can mention this letter when you write to the programme office.

How to read a PhD or fellowship call

Check these points in every notice:

• Degree names: does it say "B.S.", "Bachelor of Science" or "any bachelor's degree"? Or only BE, BTech or a Master's?
• Length: does it ask for a 4-year degree? The DS BSc takes at least 9 terms. The BS takes at least 12.
• Subject: some calls ask for a degree in a named field.
• Marks: IIT Madras converts CGPA to percentage as CGPA x 10, under a Senate-approved rule in a Dean's letter of 14 June 2024.
• Entrance test: does it need a GATE score or another test?

If the wording does not clearly cover your degree, email the programme or fellowship office. Give your exact degree name, credits and length, and keep the reply. For government exams, the ES FAQ says IIT Madras is happy to write to the organisation. You can ask support whether they will do the same for a fellowship body.

Research routes inside IIT Madras

The handbook lists outcomes for the MS routes. After the MS you can convert it into a PhD at IIT Madras, or apply for a PhD at IIT Madras or elsewhere. Building a research record during the BS

• Apprenticeship (DS): at the BS level you can do an apprenticeship with a company or a research project and earn up to 12 credits for 8 months full time. See the IITM BS apprenticeship.
• Campus courses (DS): after Foundation and both diplomas with a CGPA of 8 or above, you can earn up to 24 credits from campus courses at IITM and partner institutes.
• Papers: you may list "IIT Madras" as your affiliation only if an official IITM faculty member or instructor guided the work. Independent work goes under your own name. Breaking this rule can lead to action as serious as cancelled registration. See the research paper policy.

Common questions

Can I join a PhD straight after the BS?

The handbook says GATE can lead to an MTech, MS or PhD, depending on your other degrees. It also describes MS routes that can be converted into a PhD at IIT Madras. It does not promise direct PhD entry with the BS alone.

Do the IITM MS routes pay a stipend?

The handbook says the institute pays a stipend in the CFTI route and in the direct upgrade, as per its norms. Project staff are paid by the project. The GATE route to MS or PhD also comes with an institute stipend.

Can Foundation or Diploma holders apply for research programmes?

These are not degrees, so graduate-level calls will not usually accept them. The IITM MS routes also need 102 or 106 credits or the full BS, depending on the route.

Is there official data on PhD admits?

The Batch 2025 report counts 75 students in Master's or PhD study, but it does not split out PhDs. The support desk says many BS students have got Master's and PhD admits abroad, without numbers.
