MS Abroad After IITM BS: What the Official Data Shows

Yes, IITM BS students have got into Master's programmes abroad. IITM's Batch 2025 report lists 27 students who went abroad for postgraduate study. But the numbers are small, and many of these students also had another degree. Each foreign university decides whether your degree meets its entry rules.

Batch 2025: where students went

The Batch 2025 report covers 545 Data Science students who finished a BSc or 114 credits during 2024. Their status was compiled in December 2025. 75 were pursuing a Master's or PhD: 27 abroad and 48 in India.

One student each went to the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, National University of Singapore, University of Toronto, University of Warwick, University of Bristol, TU Dortmund, TU Berlin, Toulouse School of Economics, Arizona State University, ITMO University and WorldQuant University.

The report does not say which of the 27 were standalone students. Overall, 435 of the 545 were doing another degree or already working.

Batch 2024: a smaller group

The Batch 2024 report covers 131 students who finished a BSc or 114 credits in 2023, tracked until December 2024. Eight went abroad for postgraduate study, one each to the Georgia Institute of Technology, HEC Paris, Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Stony Brook University, UMass Amherst, the University of North Carolina, the University of Southern California and the University of Sydney.

The wider student survey

The Career Choices Report of January 2026 collects answers from students at all levels during course registration. From the January 2025 to the January 2026 terms, 334 students reported an admission to higher education outside India: 63 at Foundation level, 230 at Diploma level and 41 at Degree level.

Most of them were at Foundation or Diploma level, so they did not yet hold an IITM degree. Their admits cannot be credited to the IITM degree alone. Another table in the same report splits abroad admits by student type: 41 dual degree and 12 standalone over the same four terms. The report does not explain why the two totals differ. 3-year BSc or 4-year BS

In Data Science you can exit with a BSc after 114 credits (at least 9 terms, about 3 years) or a BS after 142 credits (at least 12 terms, about 4 years). ES has only the 4-year BS.

Many universities abroad state how many years of bachelor's study they expect. Check that line on each university's admissions page before you decide to exit with the BSc. BSc or BS: which exit to choose covers the trade-off.

Documents you will need

• Transcript: the IITM support desk says it cannot send transcripts directly to a foreign university. It sends a physical copy to your address in India, and you forward it. Official transcripts are issued on Thursdays. After you graduate, the handbook lists the alumni card as needed to apply for a transcript.
• Grade cards: a Dean (Academic Courses) letter of 14 June 2024 says the programme issues only cumulative grade cards, not term-wise grade cards. If a university asks for semester marksheets, send this letter with your grade card.
• Percentage: the same letter gives the Senate-approved conversion: percentage = CGPA x 10. It also says no class, division or rank is awarded.
• Medium of instruction: the same letter says English is the medium of instruction in all IIT Madras BS programmes. IITM does not issue personal copies of it. The letter points to the DS important documents page for downloads, and it is also listed on the ES page.
• Name: a letter of 12 August 2025 says the name on your degree follows your Class 10 certificate or a Gazette name change, not your passport. If the two differ, be ready to explain.

What the data cannot tell you

• How many students applied abroad and were rejected.
• Which admits came from students with only the IITM BS.
• How credential evaluation agencies such as WES rate the degree. We found no official IITM information on this, so do not rely on forum claims.

If you are deciding whether to do the BS alone or alongside college, read standalone or with college. The support desk also notes that many BS students have got Master's and PhD admits outside India. Acceptance still depends on each university, as covered in foreign recognition of the IITM BS.

Common questions

Is the 3-year DS BSc enough for an MS abroad?

It depends on the university and the country. IITM does not publish a list. Read each university's minimum qualification before you choose the BSc exit.

Will IITM send my transcript straight to the university?

No. The support desk says it sends the physical copy to your India address only. You arrange the delivery to the university.

Did any standalone students get admits abroad?

Yes. The January 2026 Career Choices Report shows 12 standalone students reporting admits abroad across four terms. It does not name their universities.

Is there data for Electronic Systems students?

We found no official ES data on higher studies abroad. The batch and career reports above are for Data Science.
