IITM BS Quiz 1 and Quiz 2: What They Are and How They Count

Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 are the two proctored exams in the middle of every IITM BS course. You write them in person, in the city you chose, at the end of week 4 and week 8. You must attend at least one of them, or you cannot write the end term. A quiz you miss scores 0, and there is no make-up quiz.

The rules below are the same in the Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks.

When the quizzes happen and what they cover

Quiz 2 is not only about weeks 5 to 8. It covers everything from week 1. So do not drop the early weeks after Quiz 1.

How long the quiz session is

All your courses are tested in one sitting. The total time depends on how many courses you are taking.

The quizzes are in person, so the exam centre rules apply. Go only to the centre shown on your hall ticket. Students writing from outside India use remote proctoring and must verify their location.

How the quizzes count in your score

The quizzes do two jobs.

1. They decide if you can write the end term. You must attend at least one of the two. If you attend neither, your grade is WQ, which is a fail with 0 grade points. You then have to repeat the full course.
2. They add to your Total Course Score (T). The handbook does not fix the weight of the quizzes. Each term's grading document sets it for each course. See how the grading system works for how the parts add up.

The handbook calls your combined quiz result the average quiz score, Q. This matters if you miss the end term. If you then take a make-up end term in the very next term, Q carries over. You do not write the quizzes again.

Your qualifier score can act as Quiz 1

There is one special rule for new students. In the term right after your qualifier exam, your qualifier score is used as your Quiz 1 score. This applies only to foundation courses.

You can still write Quiz 1 if you want. In that case, the better of the two scores is used. So writing Quiz 1 can only help your Quiz 1 number, never hurt it.

This rule applies only in that first term after the qualifier. From the next term onward, the normal quiz rules apply. More about the qualifier is on our qualifier page.

What if you miss a quiz

• The missed quiz is counted as 0.
• There is no make-up quiz. The handbook says this plainly.
• Missing one quiz still leaves you eligible for the end term, as long as you attend the other one.
• Missing both quizzes gives you WQ. You cannot write the end term, and you repeat the full course at the normal course fee.

The handbook adds that the one-quiz rule may change, and asks you to check the grading document. If you know you will miss a quiz date, plan to attend the other one.

Common questions

Can I skip Quiz 1 and write only Quiz 2?

Yes, by the handbook rule, attending one quiz is enough to stay eligible for the end term. But Quiz 1 will count as 0 in your score. Only skip it if you really have to.

Is there a best-of-two rule for the quizzes?

The only better-of-two rule the handbook gives for quizzes is between your qualifier score and Quiz 1, in your first term. How Quiz 1 and Quiz 2 combine in your score is set in the grading document for each course.

Does my qualifier score count as attending a quiz?

The handbook does not say. It only says the qualifier score is used as your Quiz 1 score. To be safe, attend at least one quiz in person, and ask the support team if you need a clear answer.

Do I rewrite the quizzes if I take a make-up end term?

No, as long as you take the make-up in the very next term. Your quiz score carries over. If you wait longer, you must repeat the full course, quizzes included.
