IITM BS End Term Exam: Eligibility, Format and Rules

The end term is the final exam of every IITM BS course. It is written in person, lasts 1.5 hours per course, and makes up 50% of your Total Course Score (T). To write it, your best 5 of the first 7 weekly assignments must average at least 40, and you must have attended at least one quiz. If you are eligible but miss it, you get an I grade and can take a make-up exam in the next term.

These rules are the same in the Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES) handbooks.

Who can write the end term

You get a hall ticket for the end term only if you meet both conditions:

• Assignments: take your best 5 scores out of the first 7 weekly assignments. Their average must be 40 out of 100 or more. A skipped assignment counts as 0.
• Quizzes: you must attend at least one of the two in-person quizzes.

If you miss the assignment condition, your grade is WA. If you attend no quiz, your grade is WQ. Both count as a fail with 0 grade points, and you have to repeat the whole course.

The handbook says these rules may change for a course. It asks you to check the grading document of the term for the exact end term eligibility. Do that for each course early in the term, not in week 11.

Exam format and timing

The handbook does not describe the question paper itself, such as the number or type of questions.

Where you write it

The end term is an in-person exam. The exam centre policy (updated 15 July 2025) is strict:

• In India: go only to the centre printed on your hall ticket. If you turn up at any other centre, you will not be let in, whatever the reason.
• Outside India: you write the exam through remote proctoring. You must verify your location during the check-in. If you hide or misstate where you are, you are not allowed to take the exam, and it is treated as malpractice.

How the end term counts in your grade

Your end term score E is half of T. The other half comes from assignments, quizzes and, in some courses, programming exams. You pass the course when T reaches 40 out of 100. For how T turns into a letter grade, see the IITM BS grading system.

What if you miss the end term

If you were eligible but absent, the course is marked I (Incomplete). You then have two options.

1. Make-up exam: write only the end term, in the next term. You do not redo the assignments or quizzes. Your quiz score carries over.
2. Repeat the full course: pay the normal course fee and do all assignments, quizzes and the end term again.

Rules for the make-up option:

A make-up does not use up your CCC, but it does take one of your final exam slots. You can write at most 4 final exams in a term, counting full courses and make-ups together. Common questions

Can I write the end term from home?

The handbook mentions remote proctoring only for students writing from outside India. If you are in India, you write at the centre on your hall ticket. No other centre will let you in.

I met the assignment rule but missed both quizzes. Can I still write the end term?

No. Attending at least one quiz is required. With no quiz attended you get a WQ grade and have to repeat the course.

Can I take a make-up end term two terms later?

No. The make-up must be in the next term. If you skip that term, you have to repeat the whole course, including assignments and quizzes.

How many end term exams can I write in one term?

Four at most. This limit counts full courses and make-up exams together. If you already have 4 courses registered, there is no slot left for a make-up.
