The degree level of the IITM BS in Electronic Systems needs 56 more credits after the 86 you earn in the foundation and diploma. That takes you to 142 credits and the BS degree. The level has a set of core courses with one lab, 5 department electives, and open electives taken from the Data Science programme. You can also use an apprenticeship, NPTEL courses or courses done at IIT Madras or other institutes for some of the credits.

You can register for degree courses only after you complete every foundation and diploma course.

Core courses at the degree level

The handbook calls these core or mandatory courses.

A few details are unclear in the handbook:

  • Math for Electronics II appears only in the degree core list. The main course table with credits does not include it, so its credit value is not stated.
  • The handbook's two tables disagree on whether Signals and Systems is a prerequisite or a corequisite for Control Engineering. They also disagree on whether Embedded Linux and FPGAs is a prerequisite or a corequisite for its lab.

Department electives

You take 5 courses from this list, worth 20 credits in total. The handbook says the list has 9 courses, but it shows only 8.

CodeCourse
MA3101Probability and Statistics
EE4103Communication Systems
EE5101Internet of Things (IoT)
EE3106Semiconductor Devices and VLSI Technology
EE3107Analog circuits
EE5102Digital IC Design
EE5103Power Management for Electronic Systems
EE5104Biomedical Electronic Systems

None of these has a prerequisite or corequisite listed. Some of them also count towards a minor, which is covered in ES minors.

Open electives from the Data Science programme

These courses come from the BS in Data Science. The main course table gives 4 credits for each one it lists. They are split into three groups here to make the list easier to read.

Programming and data

Deep Learning for Computer Vision has the code DA5006 in the main course table and CS5003 in the prerequisite section.

Apprenticeship courses

The apprenticeship is optional. The handbook lists four apprenticeship course codes, each worth 4 credits, with no prerequisites.

CodeCourseCredits
EE4902Apprenticeship in Software-14
EE4903Apprenticeship in Software-24
EE4904Apprenticeship in Hardware-14
EE4905Apprenticeship in Hardware-24

Apprenticeship credits take the place of elective credits. How it works, and what it costs, is in the IITM BS apprenticeship guide.

How many electives do you need?

This is the part to confirm with support. The handbook's summary table for this level says 16 theory credits, 1 lab credit and 44 elective credits. Those add to 61, not 56. The core list above also has more than 16 theory credits. Another line says the level has 12 theory courses and 1 lab. The only firm number is 5 department electives worth 20 credits. For the rest, ask the programme team before you plan your final terms. The ES programme structure post shows the full credit split, and NPTEL credit transfer covers one of the other ways to earn credits.

Common questions

Can I take an open elective while still in the diploma?

No. Degree level registration opens only after you have completed every foundation and diploma course. Open electives are degree level courses.

Are the open electives the same courses Data Science students take?

The handbook describes them as courses proposed from the BS in Data Science programme. It does not say whether the course runs or exams are shared with DS students.

Which department electives lead to a minor?

The ES handbook links some of these courses to the VLSI Design and Testing minor and the IoT minor. The exact course lists are in the minors post.

Is Math for Electronics II a degree course even though it sounds basic?

The prerequisite section lists it as a degree level core course, with Math for Electronics I as a corequisite. But the suggested learning paths place it much earlier, next to diploma courses. Ask support when you can register for it, and check its credits then.
