IITM BS Mock Tests and Bonus Marks: Are They Worth It?

Yes, for most students. Under the January 2026 grading document shared with students, a mock test average of 40 or more can add up to 2 bonus marks to a course. Extra activities can add up to 3 more. But bonus marks are added only after you pass, so they can lift a grade, not rescue a fail. The mock tests are also useful practice for the in-person quizzes and end term.

Grading documents are issued each term, so confirm these rules in the current grading document on the student portal.

The bonus rules in short

The summary we have does not say how many mock tests a course has, or which activities count. Your course's grading document will.

When 2 marks change your grade

These examples use the handbook's grade bands and its pass line of 40. The DS academics page says 50, which is explained in is the pass mark 40 or 50.

The 49 row depends on the pass line. If your course's pass line is 50, a 49 is a fail and gets no bonus at all.

So the bonus matters most when you finish just below a grade line. You cannot know that in advance, so aim for the 40 average in every course.

What that is worth in CGPA

Take one 4 credit foundation course that moves from E to D. That adds 2 grade points times 4 credits, which is 8, to your points total. Across all 32 foundation credits, it raises your foundation CGPA by 0.25 (8 divided by 32). Our guide on how to calculate your CGPA shows the full method.

Compare it with improving a grade later

The other way to raise a grade is to repeat a passed course for improvement. That costs twice the regular course fee, and you redo all assignments, quizzes and the end term. From January 2026 you can only do it while you are still in the same level. For a DS foundation course, with fees for students who joined from January 2026, that is Rs 12,000 (twice Rs 6,000). Why practice work helps even without a bonus

• The handbook's weekly material. Each week has self-test questions for every lecture and a practice assignment with solutions, alongside the graded assignment.
• Assignment-based questions. From January 2026, foundation graded assignments carry 0 weight, but questions based on them, worth 10 marks, are asked in the quizzes and end term. Practice on the assignments pays off there.
• Time pressure. A quiz is one sitting: 4 hours for 4 courses, 3 hours for 3, and 2 hours for 1 or 2. Mocks help you practise that pace.

A simple plan for each course

1. Note the mock test dates for each course at the start of the term.
2. Take each mock in one sitting, with a timer, as if it were the real quiz.
3. For every question you got wrong, go back to the lecture and the practice assignment solutions.
4. Track your mock average and keep it above 40.

Common questions

Are mock tests compulsory?

They are not part of the end term eligibility rule. That rule needs a best 5 of first 7 assignment average of 40 or more and at least one quiz. Skipping mocks only costs you the chance of the bonus and the practice.

Do practice assignments count toward my score?

The handbook describes practice assignments as weekly work released with solutions, separate from the graded assignment. The grading summary we have does not mention them at all.

Do the bonus rules apply to Electronic Systems courses?

The rules here are from the BS Data Science grading document. ES courses have their own grading documents, so ES students should check those.
