IITM BS Fee Waiver Rules: Who Gets 50% or 75% Off

IITM BS gives a 50% or 75% fee waiver based on your category and your family income. General and OBC students get a waiver only if family income is Rs 5 lakh a year or less. SC, ST and PwD students get at least 50% off at any income. SC or ST students who are also PwD get 75% off at any income. The Data Science and Electronic Systems handbooks show the same table.

The fee waiver table

The handbook uses three family income bands. LPA means lakh per annum, so 5 LPA is Rs 5 lakh a year.

Three simple ways to read it:

• If you are General or OBC and your family earns more than Rs 5 lakh a year, you pay the full fee.
• If you are SC, ST or PwD, income only matters for the jump from 50% to 75%. You need family income of Rs 1 lakh or less for 75%.
• If you are SC or ST and also PwD, you get 75% in every income band.

Documents you need for each waiver

Each waiver needs proof. This is what the handbook asks for:

What this means in practice:

• A General category student needs an EWS certificate plus family income proof to get any waiver.
• An OBC student needs an OBC-NCL certificate plus family income proof.
• For the 50% waiver, SC, ST and PwD students only need the category certificate.
• A PwD student asking for 75% needs the PwD certificate, an EWS or OBC-NCL certificate, and family income proof.

What the waiver is worth in rupees

The handbooks give the waiver as a percentage. Here is what 50% and 75% come to on some level fees. Treat these as estimates, since the handbook does not show worked examples.

Which levels the waiver covers

The waiver table sits in the section on fees for the entire programme. The handbook does not limit it to any one level. The ES handbook adds that its fee table is for general category students and that SC, ST, PwD and lower income students can get extra fee scholarships from IITM.

The qualifier exam fee works differently. It has its own category rates, and the lower rates in the fee tables are for SC, ST and PwD candidates only. The Data Science handbook says no other group gets a qualifier fee waiver. See the qualifier application fee for each category.

The new income check at diploma and degree level

From the January 2026 term, there is an extra check for students with family income below Rs 5 lakh a year who claim a waiver based on income. It applies at the diploma and degree levels only.

• You submit your Income Tax Return (ITR) and/or Form 26AS. You may also need those of your parents or spouse.
• If the documents are approved, you get the waiver.
• If they are rejected, the waiver is withdrawn and you pay the course fees for your economic category.
• The ES handbook says a Rs 1,000 fee is collected for this check. It is not refunded, even if you are approved.

If you still need help paying

The handbooks also describe an SBI education loan. Interest starts from 8.10%, with no collateral and simple interest until the course ends. The student borrows along with one parent as co-borrower.

Common questions

I am General category and my family earns Rs 6 lakh a year. Do I get any waiver?

No. In the above Rs 5 lakh band, General and OBC students pay the full fee. The waiver starts only when family income is Rs 5 lakh a year or less.

As a General category student, do I need an EWS certificate?

Yes. For both the 50% and the 75% waiver, the handbook lists an EWS certificate plus family income proof for General category students.

Is the waiver the same for Data Science and Electronic Systems?

Yes. Both handbooks show the same percentages, the same income bands and the same document list.

I am in the foundation level. Do I need to send ITR or Form 26AS?

No. The extra income check is only for diploma and degree level students. You still need the documents listed in the waiver table for your category.
