IITM BS vs Paid Bootcamps and Certificate Courses

A paid bootcamp or certificate course is short, focused on job skills, and usually ends with a certificate from the company or platform that runs it. The IITM BS is a multi-year degree programme from IIT Madras, with in-person exams and a certificate at every level. A bootcamp is built for speed. The BS is built for depth and ends in a degree. Neither one guarantees you a job.

Degree or certificate

The IITM BS gives you a certificate at each level: the Foundation certificate, then a diploma, then the BSc (in Data Science) and the BS. You can stop after any level and keep what you earned. See whether a Foundation certificate or diploma alone is worth anything.

A bootcamp certificate shows you completed that provider's course. It is not a university degree. Some employers care about degrees and some care mainly about skills, and no official data tells you which is which.

What it costs

The Data Science (DS) fees for students joining from January 2026 are Rs 48,000 for the Foundation, Rs 2,10,000 up to both diplomas, and Rs 3,86,000 to Rs 4,50,000 for the full BS. These are general category fees. Waivers of 50% or 75% exist based on category and family income. At its June 2025 convocation, IIT Madras said 10,037 students from families with an income of up to Rs 1 lakh a year were on 75% scholarships, and 4,825 students studied free through CSR support. Refunds are limited. The application fee is not refundable. If you drop a course within 4 weeks, IIT Madras keeps Rs 2,000 for a Foundation course or Rs 4,000 for a diploma or degree course, and the rest goes to your student wallet, not your bank account. See IITM BS refunds.

Bootcamp prices and payment plans differ a lot. If a plan involves a loan or paying from a future salary, read every term before you sign.

Pace and effort

Each BS course runs 12 weeks, with 2 to 4 hours of video a week plus assignments. You can take up to 4 courses a term, three terms a year. The BS needs at least 4 years, and Foundation and diploma checkpoints remove students who fall too far behind. It is a long commitment.

Bootcamps are usually short and intensive. That suits someone who needs one skill quickly.

How you are tested

In the BS, quizzes and end term exams are in person and invigilated at exam centres. The DS FAQ says you cannot write them from home. Programming courses also have proctored programming exams, called OPPEs. Pass marks are fixed, and failing a course means paying and taking it again. See how OPPEs work.

For any paid course, ask how you are tested and whether you can get the certificate without a proctored exam.

Placement support

The BS placement cell (IIC) supports internships only after at least one diploma and jobs only after at least a BSc. You must also finish placement training and pass an assessment. In the September 2025 term, 49 students got jobs and 43 got internships through it. The January 2026 Career Choices Report gives a median IIC job salary of Rs 6 lakh and a median internship stipend of Rs 20,000 a month. Some bootcamps advertise placement help or even guarantees. Ask for the written terms, what counts as a placement, and outcome data with dates.

Questions to ask any paid course

• Who awards the certificate, and is it a degree?
• What is the total cost, including loans, taxes and exam fees?
• How are you tested, and is the test proctored?
• What exactly does the placement promise say, in writing?
• What is the refund policy if you stop?
• Is there outcome data with dates and the number of students it covers?

Our view

If you need one job skill in a few months, a short course may fit. If you want a degree and can commit several years, the BS is the stronger base. You can also test the BS for free first. The handbook says all BS course videos are on YouTube as public playlists.

Common questions

Does the IITM BS guarantee a job?

No. Placement support has entry rules, the numbers placed through the cell are small, and the FAQ does not promise placement.

Can I do a bootcamp while doing the IITM BS?

Nothing in the handbook stops you. Watch your load, since BS exams are in person and deadlines are weekly.

Is a Foundation certificate better than a bootcamp certificate?

No data compares them. The Foundation certificate shows you passed 8 IIT Madras courses in maths, statistics, programming and English under invigilated exams. A bootcamp certificate shows what that course covered.
