Online IIT Degree vs Regular College: What Employers See

We found no published survey of how employers in India view the IIT Madras online BS against a regular college degree. So any strong claim either way is an opinion. What does exist is IIT Madras's own outcome data for Data Science (DS) students. It shows most recent graduates working or studying further, but most of them also had another degree or work experience.

What is known and what is not

Known, from official sources:

• The degree is awarded by IIT Madras. The Electronic Systems (ES) FAQ says IITs are created under an Act of Parliament, can confer degrees, and do not need UGC approval.
• IIT Madras says the curriculum, academic rigour and quality of the BS are on par with its regular degree programmes.
• The ES FAQ says the mode, such as online or distance, is not written on the marksheet. The DS handbook does not say either way. See whether the certificate says online.

Not known: how employers as a group treat the online mode. We found no official or independent survey on it.

The opinions you will hear

These are opinions, not facts. None of them is backed by survey data.

• "Recruiters see the word online and rank it below a campus degree."
• "The IIT Madras name gets your CV read, and skills do the rest."
• "It depends on the company, the role and whether you have another degree."

Our view: the third one is the safest to plan around.

What the official data shows

The Batch 2025 summary covers 545 DS students who completed a BSc or 114 credits between January and December 2024. Their status in December 2025:

Of the 343 who were working, 34 earned under Rs 5 lakh a year, 110 earned Rs 5 to 10 lakh, 73 earned Rs 10 to 15 lakh, 38 earned Rs 15 to 25 lakh, 25 earned Rs 25 to 50 lakh and 8 earned over Rs 50 lakh. 55 did not share their salary. The report says these students worked at 245 different companies and organisations. In the list of employers it shows, the largest group was the IITs themselves, with 20 people, 15 of them at IIT Madras.

Read this with care:

• Only 110 of the 545 did the BS as their only degree. The other 435 were doing another degree or working.
• The Career Choices Report notes that the much larger salaries in its survey belong mostly to working professionals with many years of experience.
• Jobs through the BS placement cell are few. In the September 2025 term, 49 students got jobs through it.

How to make an online degree count

Build projects you can show

The DS diplomas include project courses in application development and machine learning, and the Diploma in Data Science adds a business data or deep learning project. Keep these in a portfolio. See building a portfolio from your BS projects.

Get internships early

The placement cell supports internships once you finish at least one diploma, after training and an assessment. Many students also find internships on their own. In the January 2026 survey, students reported 1,115 internships that they said the BS helped them get.

Use the apprenticeship

At the BS level, DS students can do an 8-month apprenticeship with a company or research project for up to 12 credits. The stipend is agreed with the company, and the company may make a pre-placement offer at the end. The credit transfer fee is Rs 5,000 per credit. See the apprenticeship.

Keep your paperwork in order

The handbook says students who do not submit the required medical certificate lose placement support, letters of support and bonafide certificates.

Our view

Some employers may read an online degree differently at first. What usually decides the outcome is the evidence you bring: projects, internships, an apprenticeship and how you do in interviews. If the BS is your only degree, start building that evidence from the diploma level, not after you graduate.

Common questions

Is there any official data on how employers rate the IITM BS?

No. IIT Madras publishes where its DS students went and what they reported earning. It does not publish employer opinion, and we found no independent survey.

Do these numbers apply to Electronic Systems students?

No. The Batch 2025 summary and Career Choices reports cover the DS programme. We found no official outcome data for ES.

Can I call myself an IIT Madras alumnus?

Only after you exit with a BSc or BS and register for the alumni card. Foundation and diploma exits do not get alumnus status. See alumni status.
