Missed a Graded Assignment in the IITM BS Qualifier? What Happens

A graded assignment you miss in the IITM BS qualifier is marked 0. That alone does not end your attempt. Your hall ticket depends on an average, and in Electronic Systems (ES), and in the second check for Data Science (DS), only your best 2 of the first 3 weeks count. So one miss in weeks 1 to 3 can be dropped, as long as your other two weeks in that course are strong enough. As a General candidate, that means scores that average 40 or more, for example 50 and 60.

Two misses in the same course are much harder to recover. A missed week 4 does not affect your hall ticket at all.

The rules that decide this

Both handbooks say each weekly assignment is marked out of 100 and an assignment you do not attempt gets 0. You then need a minimum average in each of the four courses:

The weeks used are different:

• ES: the best 2 of your first 3 weekly scores in each course.
• DS: first, the average of weeks 1 and 2. Clear it in all four courses and you can write the first exam of the term. If not, the best 2 of the first 3 weeks are used, which can make you eligible for the second exam of the term.

One thing to watch: the DS admissions page describes only the best 2 of 3 rule, while the DS handbook (updated 2 July 2026) describes the two-step check above. If this matters for you, confirm the current rule with the support team.

What one missed week means

This assumes you missed one week in one course and did the rest.

The DS week 3 row is easy to overlook. If your weeks 1 and 2 average is below the cutoff, week 3 is your only way back. Skipping it closes that door.

The score you need after one zero

If one of your two counted weeks is a zero, the other week must carry the whole average. So it needs to be double your cutoff:

This applies in DS weeks 1 and 2, or when you missed two of the first three weeks in a best 2 of 3 check.

Worked example (DS, General)

Your Statistics 1 scores: week 1 missed (0), week 2 is 65, week 3 is 72.

• First check: (0 + 65) divided by 2 = 32.5. Below 40, so no first exam.
• Second check: best two are 65 and 72, average 68.5. Above 40.
• If the other three courses also pass the second check, you get a hall ticket for the second exam, at the end of week 8.

What to do right now

1. Find out which week and which course. The effect depends on both.
2. Work out the target. Use the tables above or the calculator to see what you need in your remaining weeks.
3. Move time to that course. Your hall ticket depends on your weakest course average, not your overall average.
4. Do not skip week 4. It does not count for the hall ticket. But if you join in the term right after the qualifier, your qualifier assignment scores count as your first 4 assignment scores in those courses.
5. If a technical problem stopped you, raise a ticket on the support portal quickly, with screenshots. The handbooks do not describe any late submission or extension, so do not count on one.

Common questions

Can I submit a missed graded assignment late?

The handbooks do not mention late submission. They say each assignment must be submitted within the deadline, and an unattempted one is 0.

I missed the week 1 assignment in two courses. Is it over?

Not yet. Each course is checked on its own, so you need to recover both. In ES, strong weeks 2 and 3 in both courses can still work. In DS, you would likely be aiming for the second exam through the best 2 of 3 check.

Does a missed assignment lower my qualifier exam marks?

No. The assignments decide whether you get a hall ticket. The exam is marked separately, with its own pass rules in the qualifier passing marks.

I did not get a hall ticket because of a missed week. Can I use the re-attempt?

No. The same-term re-attempt is only for people who had a hall ticket and then were absent or failed. You would apply again in a later term as a fresh applicant.
