Can You Start IITM BS While Still in School? Class 11 and 12

You can start the admission process while in school, but not the degree itself. Once you have written your Class 11 final exams, you can apply, study the 4 weeks of qualifier content and write the qualifier exam. You can register for foundation courses only after you pass Class 12. This is true for both Data Science (DS) and Electronic Systems (ES).

What a school student can and cannot do

So a Class 11 or Class 12 student can qualify early, but cannot join yet. Passing the qualifier also does not admit you to a degree. It lets you take foundation courses, and each later level is earned by completing courses.

Subject rules for school students

• Data Science: any stream and any board. You are expected to have studied Maths and English in Class 10.
• Electronic Systems: your Class 11 subjects must include Physics and Mathematics.

How long your qualifier result stays valid

This matters most to school students, because you may wait a while before you can join. The official pages give these periods:

The DS and ES handbooks say it another way: for a Class 12 student, the score is valid for 3 terms counted from when they pass Class 12. These two versions do not match exactly. Before you plan your joining term, confirm your last valid term with the support team. Our post on qualifier score validity goes deeper.

Note one detail on the DS admissions page. If you write the qualifier after your Class 12 boards but before the result, it puts you in the 1-year group, not the 2-year group.

A sample path (example only)

1. Finish your Class 11 final exams.
2. Pick a qualifier term that does not collide with your pre-boards, board exams or entrance exams. The site's qualifier timeline shows how a cycle runs.
3. Do the 4 weeks of content and the weekly assignments, then write the 4-hour qualifier exam in person.
4. Write your Class 12 boards.
5. After you pass Class 12, register in the next term that opens, while your result is still valid.

IITM terms start in January, May and September. For example, the May 2027 term starts on 4 June 2027 and the September 2027 term on 1 October 2027.

Balancing boards and the qualifier

The qualifier has 4 weeks of content in 4 courses:

• DS: English 1, Mathematics 1, Statistics 1 and Computational Thinking.
• ES: English 1, Math for Electronics 1, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, and Introduction to C Programming.

To sit the exam, a General candidate needs an assignment average of at least 40% (35% for OBC-NCL and EWS, 30% for SC, ST and PwD). To pass, a General candidate needs a 50% average and at least 40% in each course. More in how to prepare for the qualifier.

Our advice: board exams matter more. Do not pick a qualifier term that overlaps your board months. The application fee is Rs 4,000 for General candidates and is not refunded. If your result expires before you can join, you must redo the whole qualifier process.

Your first term after joining

Your average qualifier score sets how many courses you may take in your first term. On the DS admissions page, a score below 50% allows up to 2 courses, 50% or more allows up to 3, and 70% or more allows up to 4. See courses after qualifying.

The handbook lets the qualifier score count as your Quiz 1 score only if you join right after the qualifier. Since school students usually join later, expect to write Quiz 1 normally.

Common questions

I am in Class 10. Can I apply now?

No. You can apply only after your Class 11 final exams. Use the time to get strong in Class 10 and 11 maths.

Can I start courses while my Class 12 result is pending?

No. Both FAQs say you can write the qualifier while in school, but you can register for courses only after you clear Class 12.

I am appearing for JEE. Is there another way in?

Yes. If you are eligible to appear for the current year's JEE Advanced, you can join the foundation level without the qualifier exam. See IITM BS through JEE.

What if I do not pass Class 12 on the first try?

You cannot register until you pass. If your qualifier result expires before then, you must go through the qualifier process again and pay the fee again.
