Other IITM BS Fees: Credit Transfer, Apprenticeship, Re-exams

Apart from course fees, the IITM BS handbooks list several smaller charges. The main ones are Rs 1,000 per credit for NPTEL credit transfer, Rs 2,500 per credit for campus courses, Rs 5,000 per credit for apprenticeship credits, Rs 1,000 or Rs 2,000 per make up exam, Rs 5,000 for re-entry exams and Rs 6,000 plus GST for alumni registration.

Credit transfer fees

NPTEL courses

A 4, 8 or 12 week NPTEL course counts as 1, 2 or 3 credits. You pay Rs 1,000 per credit to the BS programme, so Rs 1,000, Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,000. This is separate from the exam fee you pay to NPTEL on the SWAYAM portal. You must register for the NPTEL exam with your official IITM BS email ID.

NPTEL credits are pass or fail and do not count in your CGPA. If a credit transfer is the only thing you do in a term, you also pay the Rs 1,000 RKA fee for that term. Details are in NPTEL credit transfer rules.

Campus courses

For courses taken on campus, you pay Rs 2,500 per credit of the IITM BS programme. The fee the campus institute charges is extra and follows that institute's rules. Three IITM campus credits count as 1 BS credit. See campus course credit transfer.

Apprenticeship credit fee

Crediting an apprenticeship at the BS level costs Rs 5,000 per credit. You pay it at the time of registration. The credits you can earn differ between the programmes:

Exam repeat fees

Make up exam for an I grade

If you missed only the end term exam and got an I grade, you can take a make up exam. It costs Rs 1,000 per foundation course and Rs 2,000 per diploma or degree course. You get only one chance at it. OPPE repeats in Data Science

For courses with an OPPE, the DS handbook gives these fees:

The ES handbook's OPPE table shows Rs 2,000 in every one of these cases, at both the foundation and diploma levels. That does not match the ES text, which says an end term repeat costs Rs 1,000 for a foundation course. Confirm with support if this affects you.

Full repeats and improvement

Repeating a course after a fail (U grade), or after you were not allowed to write the end term (WA or WQ grade), costs the normal course fee. Repeating a course you passed, to improve the grade, costs twice the normal course fee.

Re-entry exam fee

If you left with an original diploma or degree certificate and want to come back to the next level, you must write final exams in some subjects. This is in the Data Science handbook. The fee is Rs 5,000, whether you have 2, 3 or 4 subjects. SC, ST and PwD (over 40% disability) candidates get a 50% waiver on it. See re-entry after an exit for the subject list.

Alumni fee

BSc and BS graduates in Data Science and BS graduates in Electronic Systems must register with the IIT Madras Alumni Association. Your original certificate is processed only after this. The handbooks give the fee as Rs 6,000 plus GST, and as a one-time payment of Rs 7,080 to IITMAA. It is collected in two halves: 50% in your first term at the degree level and 50% in the next term. Transcripts and dropping a course

Transcripts and bonafide certificates: the handbooks explain how to apply and say these are issued every Thursday. They do not list a fee.
Dropping a course: you can drop within 4 weeks of the term start. Rs 2,000 is kept back for a foundation course and Rs 4,000 for a diploma or degree course. Refunds go to your student wallet, not your bank account.
