Why You Cannot Register for Only One Lab in IITM BS ES

In the IITM BS in Electronic Systems, you cannot register for only one lab in a term. A student with just one lab is not allowed to attend the in-person lab sessions at IIT Madras. If you register for a single lab anyway, you cannot visit campus that term, you get an I (Incomplete) grade in that lab, and you must finish it later together with another lab.

What the rule says

The rule is part of the foundation lab registration policy that took effect in May 2026. The handbook marks it as strictly prohibited. The policy groups labs so that foundation students visit campus at most twice. A trip for one lab does not fit that plan.

What happens if you register for one lab

• You are not allowed to come to campus for labs that term.
• The lab gets an I (Incomplete) grade automatically.
• The lab is carried forward. You complete it in a later term, alongside at least one other lab.

So one wrong registration costs you a full term for that lab. It can also delay the next lab in the chain. For example, the Electronics Lab needs the ESTC Lab first, and the Embedded C Lab needs the C Programming Lab first.

Allowed lab combinations

Plan your labs from one of the two approved tracks.

How people end up with one lab

Here are some ways a plan can break:

• You plan two labs, but you are not ready for one of them because its theory course is not done. For example, the ESTC Lab needs the ESTC course.
• You fail or miss a lab in a group, and only that one is left to finish.
• You add only the next lab in a chain because the other labs in your track are already done.

Before each lab term, list the labs you will take and check each one's theory course and lab prerequisites. If only one lab is possible, take theory courses that term and do the lab later with another one. The ES study plans show where labs fit in each plan.

Common questions

Does this rule apply to diploma labs too?

The rule sits inside the foundation lab policy, so it is written for foundation labs. The handbook does not say whether it also covers diploma or degree labs. The suggested learning paths show the Embedded Linux and FPGA Lab alone in a term, so the rule may not apply there. Confirm with support.

Is the I grade the same as failing?

No. I means Incomplete, while U is the fail grade. For this rule, the handbook says the lab must be carried forward and done with another lab in a later term. The general grade rules are in repeating a course in IITM BS.

Do I pay again for a lab carried forward this way?

The handbook does not say. It only says the lab must be finished alongside another lab in a later term. Ask support about fees before your next registration.
