After you pass the IITM BS qualifier, you decide which term to start, open the course registration form from your dashboard, pick your courses and exam cities, upload your documents and pay. You do this with your personal email. Your roll number and official student email ID come only after your uploaded documents are approved, and document checks can take up to 3 weeks. So register early and upload clear documents.

Step 1: read your result and admission letter

Your marks show up in your portal login, with an email alert. Qualified candidates are told by email, WhatsApp and the portal whether they can register further, and an admission letter is generated for each of them. Save a copy of the letter.

Step 2: decide when to start

How you passedWhen you can start
First exam of the termThe same term, or a later term while your score is valid
Second exam of the term (end of week 8)Only from the next term, while your score is valid

The handbooks say the score is valid for 3 terms after the exam. The admissions pages add that it is longer for candidates who have not yet passed Class 12, and the DS and ES pages word this differently. Read how long the qualifier score is valid before you plan a gap.

Step 3: know your course limit

Your first term course limit depends on your qualifier marks:

Average qualifier exam scoreCourses you can take
Below 50Up to 2
50 to below 70Up to 3
70 or moreUp to 4

If you passed the first exam and join in the same term, the limit is 4 by default. The DS handbook calls this limit a suggestion, but its registration steps say you register up to it, so check what the portal allows. More in how many courses you can take after qualifying.

Step 4: register, upload documents and pay

The DS FAQ says the course registration form opens from your dashboard once you clear the qualifier. In that form:

  • Pick your courses, within your limit.
  • Pick two exam cities for your quizzes and end term exams.
  • Upload one education document. The DS FAQ says one of these is mandatory: your Class 12 or equivalent marksheet, a degree certificate, or the certificate of your highest education.
  • Pay online for the credits you register for.

The ES handbook adds that registration is approved only after documents are verified, and fees are paid after that step.

Step 5: wait for document approval and your student email

Once your documents are approved, you get a roll number and an official email ID:

After that, you log in to the portal, your dashboard and your courses with this new email.

The DS FAQ says verification can take up to 3 weeks. If a document is unclear, broken or wrong, it can be returned, and you get a chance to re-upload within a deadline. If it is taking longer than that, see what to do when document verification is slow.

How your qualifier scores carry over

In your first term right after the qualifier, your qualifier exam score counts as your Quiz 1 score, and your qualifier assignment scores count as your first 4 assignment scores in the courses you register for. The DS handbook adds that if you write Quiz 1 again that term, the better of the two scores is used.

Two things to finish in your first term

Both handbooks list these as mandatory:

  • POSH training. Done with your student email. If you do not finish it, you cannot register in the next term. See the POSH training rule.
  • Medical certificate. The form link is emailed after the term starts. Without it, you lose access to things like bonafide certificates and placement support.

First term tips

Our own suggestions:

  • Take fewer courses than your limit if you are unsure. The official DS academics page expects about 10 hours per course per week at the foundation level.
  • Do not wait for your email to start studying. Both handbooks say course videos are also on YouTube as a public playlist.
  • Keep a folder with your admission letter, documents, payment receipts and any support ticket numbers.

Common questions

My course starts soon but I still have no student email. What do I do?

The email comes only after document approval. Check if any document was returned for re-upload. If verification has passed 3 weeks, raise a support ticket and follow up on the same ticket.

Can I change courses after paying?

This depends on the drop rules for your term, not on the qualifier. Check the course drop window in the handbook before you pay for courses you are unsure about.

I passed but do not want to start this term. Do I lose my pass?

You keep your pass as long as you register while your score is valid. Once the score expires, you have to go through the full qualifier process again.

Can I apply for the qualifier again to get a higher score?

No. The handbooks say that once you qualify, you cannot apply again while your score is valid.
