Worked-Out Assignment Submissions in IITM BS ES Courses

In some IITM BS Electronic Systems courses, you must upload a scanned copy of your rough working along with each assignment. This applies to four foundation courses and every diploma course. The sheets are not graded and do not earn partial marks. The programme checks a random sample of them. The rule started in the January 2025 term.

Which courses need worked-out sheets

Other foundation courses, such as English I and II or the programming courses, are not on the list. The diploma course list is in ES diploma courses and labs.

How to submit them

1. Solve the assignment on paper and show your steps.
2. Take a photo or scan of each page.
3. Put all the pages into one PDF.
4. Upload the PDF together with your assignment submission.

The sheets do not need to be neat. The handbook says a photo of your work, compiled into a PDF, is enough. It does not give a page limit or a file size limit. Keep the paper sheets after you upload them. They are useful when you revise and when you go over mistakes after the deadline.

How worked-out sheets count

They do not count towards your marks. The handbook says they are not graded and not checked for partial marks. What does count is your score on the graded assignment itself.

The programme does random sampling of the sheets. The handbook does not say what happens after a sheet is sampled. So treat the upload as a real requirement, even though it carries no marks.

Why the programme asks for them

The handbook gives two points. First, the sheets are sampled at random. Second, after the graded assignment deadline passes, you can discuss your mistakes and improve your understanding. Having your own written steps makes that discussion easier, because you can see where you went wrong.

How the graded assignments themselves work

The worked-out sheets go with the weekly graded assignments, so the assignment rules still matter:

• A graded assignment is released each week along with that week's videos.
• To be allowed into the end term exam, the average of your best 5 scores among the first 7 weekly assignments must be at least 40 out of 100.
• Assignment scores also count towards your final course score.
• An assignment you do not attempt is counted as 0.
• The exact rules can change from course to course, so read each course's grading document.

Common questions

Will I lose marks if my handwriting is messy?

No. The handbook says the sheets do not have to be neat, and they are not graded. Just make sure the photo is clear enough for someone to follow your steps.

Do I need worked-out sheets for lab courses?

The handbook lists four foundation theory courses and all diploma courses. It does not mention labs separately. If a lab or project course asks for them, its course page will say so.

Can I type my working instead of writing it?

The handbook talks about scanning or photographing your worked-out sheets, which points to handwritten work. It does not ban typed work, but ask the course team before you switch.
