Which IITM BS Diploma First: Programming or Data Science?

If you plan to go on to the BSc or BS, you need both diplomas, so the real question is order, not choice. Mixing courses from both diplomas from your first diploma term keeps both moving, because each diploma has a prerequisite chain that takes at least 2 terms. The handbook allows either approach. If you plan to stop after one diploma, pick the one whose courses match the work you want to do. Either way, you must pass all 8 foundation courses before you can register for any diploma course.

What each diploma is about

The DS academics page describes them like this:

• Diploma in Programming: databases, programming, and data structures and algorithms, which you then use to build a web application by the end.
• Diploma in Data Science: collecting, analysing and interpreting data. The business data courses set the context, and the machine learning courses teach you to analyse the data.

Each diploma is 6 courses and 2 projects, 27 credits. The fee is the same whichever you take first: Rs 81,000 per diploma at Rs 3,000 per credit for students who joined from January 2026, before any waiver.

The prerequisite chains

These come from the course tables on the DS academics page. A corequisite can be taken before or in the same term.

DBMS, PDSA, Java, System Commands, MLF and BDM have no prerequisites inside the diploma.

So MAD2 can come no earlier than your 2nd diploma term, and MLP also no earlier than your 2nd. If you take one diploma fully first, the other's chain starts late.

Which first, by goal

One more reason to finish all 6 theory courses of a diploma early: if you complete them but a project is still pending, the handbook gives you an Advanced Certificate for that diploma. See the advanced certificate.

Two traps to plan around

• The term 3 checkpoint. If you started the diploma from May 2024, you need 3 courses and 1 project within your first 3 diploma terms, or you go on probation. The MAD1 project can be done in your first or second term, so it is an easy early project.
• The BDM project. If you choose Option 1, the handbook asks you to register for the BDM project by your 2nd diploma term. Students usually need 2 to 3 terms to finish it.

Also note the Option choice affects the degree level. If you finish Option 1, the Option 2 courses are closed to you later. If you finish Option 2, you can still take the Option 1 courses as degree electives. More in the Diploma in Data Science.

A sample 6 term order (both diplomas, Option 2)

This is one order that fits every prerequisite above. It is our example, not an official plan.

Check it against the rules. By term 3 you have 7 courses and 2 projects, well past the 3 and 1 needed. All 4 projects are done by term 5, one term before the term 6 checkpoint, which is what the handbook recommends. No term has more than 4 items.

For Option 1, move BDM into term 1, register the BDM project by term 2, and take Business Analytics once BDM is done.

How fast should you go?

The handbook's suggested pace for both diplomas is 6 terms at about 40 hours a week if you are studying or working alongside. It suggests 4 terms only if you study full time at 70 or more hours a week, and 6 or 7 terms if you are new to programming. Common questions

Can I start a diploma course with one foundation course still pending?

No. All 8 foundation courses must be completed before you can register for any diploma level course.

Can I take MLF and MLT in the same term?

Yes. MLF is a corequisite of MLT, so both can be in one term. MLP must wait until both are done.

Can I do MAD1 and its project together?

Yes. MAD1 is a corequisite of the MAD1 project, and DBMS is a corequisite of MAD1. So DBMS, MAD1 and the MAD1 project can all sit in the same term.
