IITM BS Minor in Multimodal AI Systems: Courses and Rules

The IITM BS Minor in Multimodal AI Systems needs three courses: Deep Learning for Computer Vision, Speech Technology, and Large Language Models. You also need Deep Learning Practice as the prerequisite. Each course is 4 credits, so the minor is 12 credits, or 16 with the prerequisite. All of it counts inside the 142 credits of the BS in Data Science.

Courses in the Multimodal AI Systems minor

This minor has been available from the September 2025 term. Credits and levels come from the degree level course table (updated 18 March 2026).

The codes in the minor list do not match the course table for two courses:

• Deep Learning for Computer Vision is BSCS5006 in the minor list and BSDA5006 in the table.
• Large Language Models is BSCS5004 in the minor list and BSDA5004 in the table.

The names are the same in both places, but confirm the code with support when you register.

The handbook says level 5 courses are more complex than level 3 and level 4 courses, with the same credits and fee as level 4.

Prerequisites for each course

• Deep Learning Practice needs Deep Learning (BSCS3004), a mandatory BSc level course.
• Large Language Models also needs Deep Learning (BSCS3004).
• Deep Learning for Computer Vision and Speech Technology have no prerequisite in the table.

For the minor, the Deep Learning Practice prerequisite is checked when the minor is about to be given. The handbook says the order in which you completed it does not matter.

Rules for this minor

• The credits count within the 142 credits for the BS degree. They are not extra.
• You get the minor only with the BS degree, not with the BSc.
• IIT Madras issues a separate document for the minor. Your transcript and degree certificate do not change.
• You can earn more than one minor if you finish every course of each.
• One course can count for only one minor.

The last rule matters here. Large Language Models is also in the Generative AI minor. Deep Learning Practice, your prerequisite, is a course in both Generative AI and Cloud Computing for AI. The handbook does not name a replacement for a shared course, and it does not say whether a prerequisite counts as "used". Ask support before you plan this minor together with either of those.

The course names cover vision, speech and language. It may suit you if you want AI skills across more than one of these, not just one.

How to plan it alongside your electives

After the five mandatory BSc level courses, you have about 36 elective credits across the BSc and BS levels. This minor uses 12 of them, or 16 if you still need Deep Learning Practice.

The March 2026 table marks these terms. Offering also depends on registration numbers.

Common questions

Can I start with Speech Technology before Deep Learning Practice?

Yes. Speech Technology has no prerequisite in the course table, and the minor prerequisite is checked only at the end. You just need Deep Learning Practice done before the minor is given.

Is Speech Technology a Data Science course?

It carries a BSEE code and is tagged BD in the DS course table. It is listed as a normal degree level elective for DS students.

Can Electronic Systems students take this minor?

The ES handbook does not list it. It lists only Application Development, Machine Learning, VLSI Design and Testing, and IoT for ES students.
