IITM BS Minor in Computer Systems: Courses and Rules

The IITM BS Minor in Computer Systems needs three courses: Computer Systems Design, Operating Systems and Computer Networks. You also need Programming in C as the prerequisite. Each course is 4 credits, so the minor is 12 credits, or 16 if you count Programming in C. All of it sits inside the 142 credits of the BS in Data Science.

Courses in the Computer Systems minor

This minor has been available from the September 2025 term. Credits and levels come from the degree level course table (updated 18 March 2026).

The minor list spells the first course "Computer System Design". The course table calls it "Computer Systems Design". The code BSCS3031 is the same in both places.

The order to take them in

From the course table:

1. Programming in C has no prerequisite.
2. Computer Systems Design lists Programming in C as a corequisite, so you can take them together in the same term.
3. Operating Systems needs Computer Systems Design first.
4. Computer Networks needs Programming in C first.

For the minor itself, the handbook checks the Programming in C prerequisite only when the minor is about to be given. The order does not matter for that check. The course prerequisites above still apply when you register.

Rules for this minor

• The credits count within the 142 credits for the BS degree. They are not added on top.
• You get the minor only with the BS degree, not with the BSc.
• IIT Madras issues a separate document for the minor. Your transcript and degree certificate stay the same.
• You can earn more than one minor if you finish every course of each.
• Computer Networks is also part of the IoT minor offered from Electronic Systems. It can count for only one of the two.

Who this minor may suit

The course names point to how a computer works under your code: its design, its operating system and how machines talk over a network. It may suit you if you enjoyed the programming side of the diploma more than the machine learning side.

How to plan it alongside your electives

After the five mandatory BSc level courses, you have about 36 elective credits across the BSc and BS levels. This minor takes 12 of them, or 16 with Programming in C. The DS electives list shows the other courses you could use those slots for.

The March 2026 table marks these terms. Offering also depends on registration numbers.

Computer Systems Design is not marked for January 2027, and Operating Systems depends on it. So start this chain early.

All four courses are tagged BP in the course table. Operating Systems and Computer Networks are level 4. The BS level asks for two level 4 or higher courses in the programming stream, so check with support whether these two can cover that. The BS degree level guide lists the full BS level rules.

Common questions

I already did Programming in C as an elective. Do I need to do it again?

No. The handbook only checks that you have completed the prerequisite when the minor is given. A course you already passed counts, whenever you did it.

Can I do both the Computer Systems and IoT minors?

Computer Networks is in both lists, and one course can count for only one minor. The handbook does not name a replacement course, so ask support before you plan for both.

Can Electronic Systems students take this minor?

The ES handbook does not list the Computer Systems minor for ES students. It lists Application Development, Machine Learning, VLSI Design and Testing, and IoT.
