IITM BS Minor in Digital Design: Courses and Rules

The IITM BS Minor in Digital Design needs three Electronic Systems courses: Computer Organisation, Digital System Design, and Digital IC Design. It is offered from the ES programme to Data Science students. Each course is 4 credits, so the minor is 12 credits, and they count inside the 142 credits of the BS degree.

Courses in the Digital Design minor

The DS handbook added this minor on 4 September 2026. It lists no prerequisite for the minor. The credits and levels below come from the ES course tables.

The DS handbook gives Computer Organisation the code EE2106. Both ES course tables list it as EE2104. The name is the same, so confirm the code with support when you register.

Is there a prerequisite?

The minor itself has no prerequisite. But in both ES course tables, Digital System Design (EE2103) needs Digital Systems (EE1102) first. The DS handbook does not mention this for the minor. If the course rule applies to you, you may need Digital Systems before you can take Digital System Design. Ask support before you plan.

Computer Organisation and Digital IC Design have no prerequisite in the ES tables.

In the ES programme, Digital System Design has a matching 1 credit lab, Digital System Design Laboratory (EE2902). The minor list names only the theory course, not the lab.

Rules for this minor

• The credits count within the 142 credits for the BS degree. They are not extra.
• You get the minor only with the BS degree, not with the BSc.
• IIT Madras issues a separate document for the minor. Your transcript and degree certificate do not change.
• You can earn more than one minor if you finish every course of each.
• One course can count for only one minor. Digital IC Design is also in the VLSI Design and Testing minor, so it can count for only one of the two.
• If a minor has a prerequisite, it is checked when the minor is given, and the order does not matter. This minor has none.

Who this minor may suit

The course names point to how a computer is organised inside and how digital circuits and chips are designed. It may suit a DS student who wants to understand the hardware under the software.

How to plan it alongside your electives

After the five mandatory BSc level courses, you have about 36 elective credits across the BSc and BS levels. This minor uses 12 of them. The DS electives list shows the other courses that compete for those slots.

The DS handbook does not say how DS students register for ES courses, or which terms these three will run for DS students. Ask support early, so a missing course does not hold up the minor at the end.

Can Electronic Systems students take the Digital Design minor?

The ES handbook does not list it. For ES students, Computer Organisation and Digital System Design are regular diploma level courses anyway.

What is the difference between this minor and the VLSI minor?

Both share Digital IC Design. VLSI Design and Testing adds Electronic Testing and Measurement and Semiconductor Devices and VLSI Technology, and needs Digital Systems as a prerequisite. Digital Design adds Computer Organisation and Digital System Design instead.

Is Digital System Design the same as Digital Systems?

No. They are two different ES courses. Digital Systems (EE1102) is a foundation course. Digital System Design (EE2103) is a diploma course that needs Digital Systems first in the ES tables.
